For this CD recording, he has shifted the balance more toward notation, with improvisation growing organically out of the composition. The group has expanded, with a new blend of instruments. It’s a rich sound, created by players who are accomplished bandleaders, composers, and international performers. Many of them have roots in the Creative Music Studio, and the wide-open musical philosophy that it embodied.

“[October] is a unique conception, which, although it has much in common with classical chamber music, has too many elements of improvisation, world rhythms, and tonal colors to be classed with anything else you might be listening to these days.”                                                                                           Creative Music Newsletter, 2002

Comments From Some of The Musicians

“I love the instrumentation, and the way the music is orchestrated, the way the voices are constantly interweaving. And the harmonies are lovely. For me as a player, it makes for a really unique experience.”  Tomas Ulrich, cellist

“Soothing” for us cool jazz musicians can be a negative term, but this music has a wonderful soothing quality to it. It just feels good.”                                                                                                     Tom Varner, French horn player

“It’s natural healing music. Each time you hear it, you hear something else. It has a quality that is just Larry, and it’s not anybody else; he's not copying anybody. Very few people do that; most musicians are looking for what’s working, and what other people are doing. That’s what makes it very rare. Larry knows exactly what he wants. That’s a power”
Karl Berger, composer, conductor, pianist, vibraphonist
